Trying to be Wonder Woman

At some point in our lives, we become busy. We try to do it all but something ends up having to give. For many, this may be personal time or getting to a gym for a workout.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day. What we do in those 24 hours will vary. Choose and prioritize what matters to you. If you want to exercise, you’ll find the time. If you want to watch the latest Netflix show, you’ll find the time. We make the effort to find time for matters to us.

Excuses

For years, I have struggled with finding the time to exercise. My excuses have changed over the years.

  • “I’m tired and don’t want to get up early. I need the sleep.” (Totally used this one today!)
  • “My babies need me. I can’t go to the gym now.”
  • “I don’t know what to do at the gym.”
  • “I have too many other things to do.”

I still use these excuses but overtime, my self-talk and priorities tend to win. I may not get up first thing to workout on some days BUT I do get it in eventually, even if grudgingly on some days.

Tips

Try some of these tips! Some may work for, some may not. Some may be completely unhelpful for your journey. Through trial and error, you will find what works best for you.

  • Set your clothes out the night before. You won’t have to search in the dark for an outfit. It’s less thinking for you as you try to wake up.
  • Figure out what time of day works for you. Are you an early riser? Are you a night owl? Maybe your children are at school or take taps. Try different times of day to see what works best.
  • Listen to your body. Taking days off to rest your body is important. Without rest days, you will grow weary, mentally and physically. Don’t want a full rest day? Have an active rest day.
  • Not enough time? If you don’t have a lot of time, go hard for a shorter period of time. Give yourself credit for doing something!
  • Schedule it in. Would you miss a doctor’s appointment? Schedule your workout and attend your session.
  • Determine what is good enough. If you could do one thing, what is enough? Maybe you can’t do a full workout but can fit a walk in on a break. Do something that will make you happy with your effort.
  • Talk to others. Why is this important to you? Ask them (family, friends, etc.) to support you and share why it is important to meet your goals. It’s okay to ask for help.

Prioritize

Some days it is not feasible to fit everything in. At my desk, I have a sign that says “I’m not saying I’m Wonder Woman but no one has ever seen me and Wonder Woman in the same room before.” Ironically, we both have Diana as our name. I would love to do it all and seem like I have my life together like Diana Prince. Instead, I have to prioritize daily what is important to achieve that day. Analyze what is important to you and what will get you closer to your goals, then go out and do it!
